What Is Your Dosha? Ayurveda Basics for Beginners

Every week, someone messages me the same question: "Am I a Vata, Pitta or Kapha?" — usually right after finishing a five-question online quiz. Ayurveda deserves a slightly deeper introduction than that, so let's begin properly.

The three doshas, briefly

Ayurveda sees the body and mind as governed by three biological energies, built from the five elements (space, air, fire, water, earth):

  • Vata (space + air) — governs movement: breath, circulation, nerve impulses, thought. In balance, Vata brings creativity and lightness. Out of balance, it brings anxiety, dry skin and a racing mind.
  • Pitta (fire + water) — governs transformation: digestion, metabolism, intellect. In balance, Pitta brings sharpness and leadership. Out of balance, it brings irritability, inflammation and burnout.
  • Kapha (water + earth) — governs structure: tissue, lubrication, stability. In balance, Kapha brings steadiness and compassion. Out of balance, it brings heaviness, congestion and lethargy.

You are not only one dosha. You were born with a unique combination — your prakriti — and your current state, shaped by season, stress and diet, is your vikriti. Ayurveda's real work is noticing the gap between the two.

A simple self-check

Ask yourself, honestly, about the last month:

  1. Has my sleep been light and interrupted (Vata), hot and short (Pitta), or long and heavy (Kapha)?
  2. Do I run cold and dry, warm and reactive, or cool and moist?
  3. Under stress, do I become anxious (Vata), angry (Pitta), or withdrawn (Kapha)?

Most people recognise themselves clearly in one or two of these. That recognition — not a diagnosis — is where Ayurveda begins.

One change for each dosha, starting today

  • If you lean Vata: eat warm, cooked, oily food at regular times. Your nervous system craves rhythm more than any supplement.
  • If you lean Pitta: reduce chilli, caffeine and screen time after 9pm. Cooling foods — coconut, cucumber, mint — do real work here.
  • If you lean Kapha: move your body before 10am and favour light, warm, spiced meals over heavy, cold ones.

Ayurveda was never meant to be a label. It is a lens for noticing yourself with more precision — and precision, applied gently every day, is what actually heals.
